THE GARDEN

Growing Local, Naturally

Did You Get a Plant or Seeds From Me?

Welcome! If you found The Garden after picking up a plant, cutting or packet of seeds from me, you're in the right place. I've put together notes on the plants I grow, including how I've grown them, what I've learned and what has worked — or hasn't worked — in my own backyard.

Look under Plant Guides to find the plant or seeds you took home.

Welcome to The Garden

I'm a backyard gardener, not a gardening expert. Most of what I know has come from years of planting things, watching what happens, trying again — and occasionally being surprised when something grows better than I ever expected.

That's really what The Garden is about. I'll share what I'm growing here in Central Florida, what I've tried over the years, what worked for me, what didn't, and some of the things I'm still figuring out.

What's Growing?

Right now there's always something going on in my yard. Some plants are old favorites, some are experiments, and some probably seemed like a better idea when I planted them.

As I grow them, I'll put together pages with photos, notes and the things I've learned along the way. Not instructions from an expert — just the experience of one backyard gardener that might help another.

Florida Makes Its Own Rules

Gardening here can be interesting. The heat, rain, bugs and occasional cold snap all get a say in what happens. And sometimes a plant that shouldn't do well does great, while the one that's supposed to be easy decides otherwise.

That's also why you'll find a link to the OTW Weather Center in the sidebar. Around here, the weather gets a vote.

From My Garden to Yours

I'll also share seeds, plants and cuttings when I have extras, along with ideas for using what comes out of the garden. And I'd love for this section to eventually include the experiences of other local gardeners too.

So consider The Garden a place to compare notes, try things and see what happens. Sometimes we get tomatoes. Sometimes we get a lesson. Either way, we learned something.
